Why I Struggle Despite Being an INTP: The Unseen Challenges of Introverted Intuition
Introduction
I've taken the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) test during my university psychology class and was identified as an INTP. Despite my best efforts, I often find myself questioning whether I truly live up to the intelligence associated with one of the most theoretical and analytical personality types. My academic performance has been subpar, even though I diligently study and complete multiple degrees. In this article, I explore the challenges I face as an INTP and how these cognitive traits impact my abilities and academic journey.
Challenges as an INTP
Having an Introverted Intuition (Ni) as one of my primary cognitive functions, I tend to have a deep understanding of complex concepts and theories, yet I often struggle with practical real-world application. My cognitive processes are naturally focused on abstract and theoretical realms, making it difficult for me to stay fully engaged in lectures or class discussions. This cognitive style often leads to poor grades, as I get lost in my thoughts and wonder about underlying principles that other students seem to grasp more readily.
Navigating Cognitive Obstacles
Let me share a few specific examples of how my INTP traits have affected my academic performance. In middle school physics, while learning about Newton's first law, a question struck me: if no object changes its motion without a force, how does a rock gradually turn into sand? When my geography class discussed weather-related erosion, I wanted to link this to Newton's law but found it too embarrassing to ask the teacher. My fear of seeming unintelligent restrained me from seeking clarification, and by the time we moved on to mechanical energy, I was preoccupied with other questions. These moments highlight the barrier of applying theoretical knowledge to practical situations.
Although I was not bad at math, my struggle with geometry exemplifies my cognitive challenges. Questions like 'Why is π used to calculate the area of a circle and how was this number derived?' reveal my tendency to dissect and question fundamental concepts while overlooking immediate application.
Strengths and Quirks
Despite these struggles, my general knowledge surpasses that of my peers. I often engage with books that provide rich illustrations and clear explanations on subjects like geography, astronomy, history, and physics. My eyes, though, often wander to deeper theoretical explorations rather than surface-level understanding. While I may not excel in conventional subjects, I find joy in reading fairy tales and stories – fascinating narratives that do not require me to pause and question everything.
Connecting with Other INTPs
It's not uncommon for me to connect with the experiences of other INTPs. As I read about their struggles and quirks, I find myself reflecting on my own experiences. Many INTPs face similar challenges, particularly in balancing their innate theoretical thinking with practical academic demands. This recognition brings a sense of validation and understanding, knowing that I'm not alone in my cognitive journey.
Conclusion
Being an INTP presents both unique strengths and challenges. While my cognitive functions allow me to delve deep into theoretical understanding, they also make practical application a constant struggle. Understanding this balance is crucial for navigating the academic world as an INTP. If you've had similar struggles, know that you're not alone, and that your INTP traits are simply part of a fascinating and complex cognitive makeup.
