The Significance of Impeachment: A Lesson in Justice Amid Political Renewals

Justice. Now, first things first, Donald Trump was still in office when he was impeached. The primary purpose of the Senate trial is to convict or vindicate the charges related to the impeachment, which were primarily centered around incitement of insurrection.

The Impeachment and Its Context

Donald Trump spent the last three months of his presidency lying to his base and riling them up. In turn, the seditious mob that stormed the Capitol on January 6, 2021, was inspired by his rhetoric. These rioters attempted to halt the counting of electoral votes, a process mandated by the Constitution.

It's interesting to hear Trump supporters dissect his speech from the day of the insurrection, but the critical question is whether his words incited the rioters. To incite is to inspire or to cause to happen. The question boils down to whether his rhetoric caused the violent actions of the rioters.

Witnesses Speak: A Matter of Clarity

To determine if Trump’s words led to the insurrection, one only needs to ask the rioters themselves. Over a dozen individuals charged with involvement in the attack have already indicated that Trump was the one who invited them in. Some even request pardons as a result of his incitement.

The importance of the impeachment and the subsequent conviction lies in its historical significance. One hundred years from now, when schoolchildren study American history, they should learn about the events of January 6, 2021, and that the man who incited that insurrection with his lies and irresponsible rhetoric was impeached and convicted.

While the conviction may be practically pointless, it still holds public value. The transparency in the actions of the President allows the public to make informed decisions, especially during election times. The impeachment is also a political measure used by opposition parties to reduce the incumbent’s approval numbers. However, it must not hurt the reelection prospects of Democrats. In essence, it is a form of election meddling disguised as justice.

Conclusion

While the impeachment process may not result in the actual removal of the President, it serves to hold him accountable for his actions. It sends a message to future leaders and teaches a valuable lesson in political accountability and constitutional principles.

Future historians will reference this event, and Americans will remember that justice was served.
