The Young Mens Christian Association (YMCA) is a global organization with a rich history that dates back to its establishment in London, England, on June 6, 1844. The YMCA in Bridgwater: A Legacy of George Williams

George Williams came from a Somerset farming background and moved to Bridgwater to apprentice at Henry William Holmes's drapery shop in 1837. Despite this change, he remembered his roots, leading to the construction of the YMCA building outside of London in his hometown. On September 11, 1886, six foundation stones were laid for the George Williams Memorial Hall, also known as the old YMCA building. This landmark served as the home of the Young Men’s Christian Association in Bridgwater, offering a place for activities and accommodation.

By the first World Conference held in Paris in 1885, the YMCA Movement had already spread to nine countries.
