The Nastiest Thing My Grandma Did: A Drunken Family Episode
Growing up with a family with a significant alcohol problem can have its unique challenges. In my case, my family on my dad’s side has a long history of alcoholism, which has often led to turbulent family dynamics and awkward situations. One such incident stands out in particular, and it was related to a family gathering that turned into a nightmare for everyone involved.
The Drinking Culture of My Family
The drinking culture in my family on my dad’s side is so ingrained that people who don't drink or drink very little are often seen as problematic. The culture of heavy drinking is deeply rooted, and it isn't uncommon to see multiple family members facing alcohol-related issues. People who don't drink are often viewed with suspicion, and there's a pervasive belief that our family has a drinking problem because we don't drink. This misperception has been a source of unnecessary tension and misunderstanding within the family.
A Drunken Incident and Its Aftermath
One particular incident that stands out occurred when I was around ten years old. My younger brother and I had recently finished cleaning our room, but instead of putting our clothes away as requested, we decided to play video games on our PlayStation. This decision led to a disagreement with my mother, who was insisting that we put our clothes in their place. We had done the initial cleaning, so we were reluctant to continue, which resulted in a stalemate.
In the middle of this disagreement, our grandparents showed up at our house, clearly intoxicated. My grandfather was standing outside near the shed, talking with my dad, while my grandmother came in through the front door, acting as if nothing was amiss. She entered our room and noticed my mother. She approached my mother and inquired about the situation, probably sensing the tension. My mother explained the situation to my grandmother, who, influenced by her high intake of alcohol, began to lose her temper. Her language became slurred and confusing, making it almost impossible for my brother and me to understand her. We found it amusing how drunk she was, which only intensified the situation.
Our laughter, meant more as a reaction to the funny, drunken behavior rather than out of disrespect, quickly escalated into full-blown amusement. However, the amusement ceased when my grandmother walked over to me, positioning herself very close. She raised her fist and threatened to punch me in the face if I didn't put my clothes away. This was a turning point, and my mother intervened, personally escorting my grandmother out of the house while lecturing her. She informed my grandfather and dad about the situation, and while my grandfather tried to downplay it, my mother was firm in her stance, suggesting that they should stay away. Both my grandparents did not interact with my parents again, except for a brief period when my grandfather might have occasionally called my dad. My mother was furious about the incident.
Reflecting on this event, I realize that witnessing a drunk family member threaten to physically harm a child is among the nastiest things my grandma has ever done around me. It was a painful and shocking experience, highlighting the harmful impact of a family's drinking culture on the younger members. This event has left a lasting impression and serves as a reminder of the complex dynamics that can arise from a family's alcoholism.
