The Journey of Anurag Kashyap: How He Became a Legendary Bollywood Director

Anurag Kashyap, a name synonymous with the raw and thought-provoking narrative style in modern Indian cinema, had a humble beginning. Born and raised in New Delhi, Anurag’s path to stardom was marked by a unique journey that started on the hallowed grounds of Hans Raj College, one of the oldest colleges in Delhi University.

From Campus to the Spotlight

Anurag Kashyap graduated from Hans Raj College way back in 1992. However, it is in his visits to his alma mater that he rekindles his college days, an era that was crucial in shaping him into the director he is today. His emotional connection to the place is palpable, as he says, It is emotional to come back here. I have so many memories of this place. I don’t think I would have survived in Mumbai if I hadn’t lived in Hans Raj’s hostel. The culturally rich atmosphere of Delhi University, coupled with the camaraderie of hostel life, provided him with a new perspective, which heralded the start of his journey into the entertainment industry.

Breaking into Bollywood: The Unsung Effort

Kashyap’s journey in Bollywood is a tale of resilience and unwavering passion. Upon moving to Mumbai, he didn’t shy away from exploring different things, even as he navigated through the cut-throat environment of the film industry. His journey was marked by groundbreaking films such as Dev.D, Gangs of Wasseypur, and Manmarziyan, which garnered critical acclaim and a dedicated fanbase.

Discovery and Belief: The Case of Nawazuddin Siddiqui

Nawazuddin Siddiqui, a celebrated actor known for his compelling performances, might only have attained mass recognition after his portrayal of Faisal in Gangs of Wasseypur. When a student asked about his belief in Nawazuddin for a particular role, Anurag Kashyap responded, I didn’t make a film believing only in Nawazuddin Siddiqui. What I wanted was the right actor for that role. I built his career because he is who he is. Every person has their own unique quality. His unique quality is that he is so invisible. When you cast him, the audience can't recognize him immediately. He has such a strong screen presence, even more so than Shah Rukh Khan and Amitabh Bachchan. When you act, you need to deliver your lines quickly to reach the audience. But in cinema, the camera and the audience are right there, so bringing his hand close to his face, the strength in his eyes is something no other actor can match.

Improv Magic on Set

Anurag’s ability to work with actors is a testament to his improvisational skills on set. His interactions with renowned actors such as Naseeruddin Shah provide a glimpse into his approach. On the set, he adopts a style that places the actors at the forefront, allowing them to shine in their roles. He recounts an instance where Naseeruddin Shah invited him to collaborate on a project. Quoting Naseeruddin Shah, he shared his experience: Naseeruddin did an interview with MTV in the US saying he wanted to do a film with me. I saw the interview and jumped. I asked him for a day. He came in the morning, shot all day, and left after wrapping up all his scenes. This incident underscores his ability to adapt and work seamlessly with his actors, often creating often unexpected yet incredibly powerful performances.

Patience and Trust

At the heart of Anurag Kashyap's approach to filmmaking is patience and trust. He emphasizes the importance of building a strong rapport with his actors, understanding their strengths and vulnerabilities, and giving them the freedom to explore and bring their unique talents to the screen. From his college days to the heights of Bollywood, Anurag Kashyap’s journey is a blend of learning, innovation, and unwavering dedication.
