Should You Always Tip a Doorman?

I always do if I remember to do so. But I'll admit shamefacedly that sometimes I forget! Here’s an instance where I just PLUM FORGOT!

I was sitting in the lobby of a hotel facing out the front entrance and waiting for my taxi. Then suddenly the valet came in and told me that my taxi was out there. Somehow, I didn't see the taxi from where I was sitting and I didn’t even see it arrive. In a frantic hurry, I dashed out opened the door of the taxi and immediately apologized to the driver for keeping him waiting. Very providentially, he told me that he had just arrived. So I hadn't kept him waiting after all. But — I had completely forgotten to tip the valet for telling me that my taxi had arrived! That valet really did deserve a good tip for telling me that vital information. But tipping just never occurred to me.

So it was another bitter purple plum for me to swallow! Tipping often gets overlooked, especially when the service seems effortless or happens quickly. However, there are situations where tipping is not only expected but also appreciated by the doorman and other hotel staff.

Tipping Services: Essential Guidelines

If they performed a one-time service for you like bringing up your heavy luggage or packages to the apartment you’re visiting or your hotel room, yes, do so then. Many apartment buildings have holiday funds for residents of apartment buildings to contribute to, where the funds are distributed among building staff like concierges, maintenance workers, and landscapers, among others.

Tipping Frequency and Context

It honestly depends on whether or not the service you’re getting is satisfying your needs. Obvious going, if the doorman is delivering food, a tip is always a nice way of thanking him. But if he is delivering a package, there is no need since you had already paid for it. Unlike food, it's most likely not something you would keep getting again and again.

Frequency: Every Time You Enter the Building?

Every time you go through the door, yup. Even if you are running back and forth to the car. Every time. Even black doorman? It's a good idea to cultivate a habit of tipping the doorman every time you enter. This promotes a culture of appreciation and ensures that you always receive excellent service.

Frequency: For Special Occasions and Generosity

Only if you want to get excellent service. I do it often, daily, and generously for the holidays. I'm always greeted with a smile and by my name, and I have never missed any delivered packages. When I arrive by taxi or by car, the doorman runs to help me and carry my packages to the elevator. Understanding the context and frequency of tipping can greatly enhance your stay and interaction with the doorman.
