It's challenging to definitively categorize Russia as wholly belonging to the West or the East. Historically, Russia's identity has been a blend of both cultural and political influences. Russian tsars frequently married European monarchs, and the country actively participated in European events, particularly in the Balkans. This was reflected in its diplomatic and military alliances such as the Entente.

The Shift After the 1917 Revolution

Following the 1917 Revolution, Russia's geopolitical landscape changed significantly. The Soviet government was not recognized by the West, leading Russia to be seen as an outcast. Historically, the USA did not recognize the USSR until 1933, further isolating Russia from Western influence. The Cold War further cemented this divide, as Russia and the West perceived each other with hostility and suspicion.

Hopes and Realities

After the collapse of the USSR, there was a period of optimism that Russia could rejoin the European family. However, these hopes were short-lived. The West's mocking and rejection of Russia became more pronounced, leaving a lasting impact. This period taught Russia that it is often treated as a stranger in the West, leading to a growing sense of disconnection with Western values and practices.

The Western Liberal Order and Its Challenges

The liberal order promoted by Western politicians and media does not resonate well with Russia. There is considerable discomfort with the extreme political correctness and oppressive political cultures in some Western countries. Russians view the obsession with gender and non-traditional sexual orientations as unnecessary. Additionally, there is a growing concern about the radicalism of individualism in Western societies, which is seen as potentially harmful to Russia's social fabric.

Trends Tending Toward the East

Today, Russia gravitates more towards collectivist values than individualism. Despite the weakening of this trend, family ties remain highly valued over career success. Hospitality is also a significant aspect of Russian culture, with friends often meeting spontaneously without a rigid schedule. Leadership is also crucial; Russians have a strong respect for decisive and powerful leaders, finding such qualities indispensable for the country's stability. Weak or indecisive leaders often lead to tragedy, as evidenced by the reigns of rulers like Nicholas II and Boris Yeltsin.
