Reflections on Moving from Europe to the USA: A Life Less Lived?
Though initially enthusiastic about relocating to the United States, the reality of life in the USA has brought mounting frustrations. From the health care system to cultural differences, there are several factors that make the experience less fulfilling compared to staying in Europe.
Health Care System
One of the most significant challenges has been the health care system. As someone with substantial financial comfort, the high costs and perceived obsolescence of the American health care system are a major drawback. In contrast, back in Europe, individuals of my age are often members of diverse associations and groups, which provide a wide range of cultural activities and social support, from dance classes to singing lessons. Here in the USA, such opportunities are much harder to come by, especially in small towns where I desire a more relaxed and peaceful life.
Cultural Activities
Another area where I miss my European roots is in the availability of cultural activities. European towns are often centers of vibrant community life, with walking-only town centers, fountains, benches, and gathering places where people socialize and form connections. The car culture in America, on the other hand, makes such traditional meeting points less accessible and less used. This lack of communal spaces means that even older individuals often reside in isolated retirement communities, which is in stark contrast to the friendly exchanges that occur frequently in European towns.
Elderly Respect and Community
With age, the importance of conversational skills and social engagement increases. However, Americans do not have the same respect for the elderly or the same level of community engagement. This is particularly noticeable in smaller towns, where I find it particularly challenging to find meaningful conversation partners. Europeans often take pride in their older generations, and this is reflected in the way they interact with one another, fostering a more interconnected community. In contrast, the absence of such respect and interaction in small American towns can be isolating.
Retirement and Safety
Retirement can be a bittersweet time, especially if moving to the USA has led to feelings of isolation. My attempt to move to a smaller town for a sense of community was disappointing. It was even worse than the coastal city where I initially lived. The lack of vibrant, elderly-focused communities in America means that the elderly are often left alone, which is a stark difference from the bustling, walkable town centers found in many parts of Europe.
Comparing the EU and the US
While the European Union (EU) offers better health care and social welfare systems, it is offset by the higher professional wages and the ability to purchase a home within a few years of residency in the USA. However, life in large metro areas in the USA can be highly stressful due to the long commuting times. On the other hand, living in smaller cities can be more healthy but with significantly lower wages.
Given the heightened levels of violence and insecurity in Europe, staying in the USA provides a level of safety that is certainly more reassuring. Yet, for someone who values community and cultural richness, the USA can feel cold and isolated, especially for the elderly.
