Perceptions of Indian Youths Towards Prime Minister Modi
As I reflect on my journey, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has significantly inspired me. Born in a humble background, he rose through selling tea and honing his leadership skills. Today, he has served as India's Prime Minister for over nine years, a role that is undoubtedly challenging. Governing a nation with the world's largest population isn't an easy task. Despite lacking formal degrees, PM Modi's knowledge and oratory skills are praiseworthy. He can address diverse audiences in multiple languages, showcasing his adaptability and understanding.
Divided Opinions Among Indian Youths
However, not everyone shares the same sentiments about PM Modi. While many, particularly the educated and religious youth, consider him a potential savior (or Messiah), others view him with suspicion and even contempt. A common accusation is that he is a cheater, a liar, and a traitor. Critics argue that he has failed to deliver on promises such as the construction of the Ram Mandir, a key demand of many Hindu nationalist groups.
It appears that the opinions of Indian youths regarding PM Modi are highly polarized. Educated and religious youth often hold him in high regard, considering him as a leader destined to redeem the nation. In contrast, the rest of the youth shows apathy towards him, much like his indifference towards their needs and concerns.
Emergence of Hindi and Hindu Imperialism
PM Modi has successfully positioned himself as the face of Hindi and Hindu nationalism, carefully cultivating this image over the years. As a result, he enjoys significant electoral support. However, this has not endeared him to the southern youth in India. They often perceive him as a fraud and a political misfit, with little regard for his views.
The Current State of Indian Youth
Unfortunately, many young Indians are preoccupied with their job requirements, material comforts, and family responsibilities. Little time is devoted to understanding the historical, political, economic, and cultural aspects of the country. Few young people develop the habit of reading books or newspapers, or take the time to comprehend the nation's history or constitution.
This lack of knowledge leaves many susceptible to misinformation and divisive politics. They are easily impacted by social and electronic media campaigns, often influenced by narratives that divide rather than unite.
Path to a More Informed Youth
To address this, I believe the youth must acquire some fundamental knowledge. They should begin by forming their opinions based on a solid understanding of historical, political, economic, and cultural contexts. Any assessment of a leader's performance should be grounded in the ability to promote long-term collective well-being, foster individual development, and establish robust governance.
Only when the youth are well-informed can they make objective judgments about political leaders and their actions. The conflict between perceptions at either end can be mitigated by promoting critical thinking and a comprehensive understanding of India's socio-political landscape.
