Many people often long for the days of youth and school, believing them to be the golden age of life. This sentiment is shared by me too. However, the reality is far different from the fantasy. School days were a life of no tension and no responsibilities, where children were pampered and cherished by their elders. However, as we grow, that period fades into a mere memory, and we realize that wishing to go back might not be the best choice after all.
The Idealized View of School Days
It goes without saying that during our school days, we lived a carefree life, free from the stress and responsibilities that come with adulthood. The mornings were filled with laughter and delicious lunch, shared with friends. But, does that mean we would want to return to those days if given the chance?
The Imperfect Reality
Many individuals, especially those who have experienced harsh realities during their childhood, would vehemently disagree. My experience, for instance, is one of many. At 14 years old, I had a mother who suffered from what is now known as bipolar disorder but at the time was undiagnosed. She was physically and emotionally violent, and my childhood was filled with humiliation and embarrassment. My life was marked by powerlessness until I turned 16, during which I felt constantly attacked and called names. Eventually, she never touched me again, but I felt a deep sense of resilience and determination to survive and move forward. As an adult, this experience has made the concept of going back to school days utterly unacceptable to me.
Why Some May Desire to Go Back
For those fortunate enough to enjoy a loving upbringing, the memories of school days can be incredibly precious and nostalgic. They might find comfort in the idea of revisiting those happy moments. However, it is important to acknowledge that many other students, especially those who faced bullying, emotional abuse, or a violent home environment, would not want to return to those days for any reason.
The Evolution of Perspective
As we grow, our perspective on those longed-for school days changes. The ideal of youth often blurs into a happier time, with people forgetting the hardships and challenges. However, for individuals like myself, those years were not solely filled with joy and laughter, but also pain and sorrow.
