Navigating the Journey of Raising a Transgender Child: Challenges and Triumphs
Parenting a transgender child can be an incredibly rewarding yet complex journey. Understanding and embracing gender identity goes beyond simply changing pronouns, and involves a multitude of challenges and triumphs along the way.
Just as with any other child, the core values and dreams of my middle son Owen remain paramount. At 5 years old, Owen approached me, no longer identifying as the gender assigned at birth. He actively prefers using pronouns like he/him/son, reflecting a non-binary identity. This preference stems from a place where speaking his truth appears to be less of an act of rebellion and more of an expression of authenticity. While Owen may change or grow in ways that surprise me, my desire remains that he becomes a supportive and dream-driven individual.
Don't make something out of nothing. A transgender identity is not a terrible disease; it's an essential part of who they are.
The Challenges
The transition into a lifelong journey as a parent of a transgender child is fraught with challenges. Unlike diseases or illnesses, a transgender identity should not be sensationalized or over-exaggerated. It is an integral part of the individual.
Loss and Grief: Multiple family members can abandon a transgender child due to misunderstanding or discomfort. I faced the heartbreak of Owen's four active grandparents abruptly cutting all ties, leaving just a Educational Struggles: In Owen's case, this involved physical and emotional assault at school, with teachers indifferent. One particularly unfortunate event occurred when I was temporarily away on business, and his mother's dominant personality further complicated the situation. These adversities required re-gaining control, including homeschooling for a period of six months due to regular beatings. Therapy and Military School: At 10 years old, a psychiatrist recommended sending Owen to military school for several years. This decision was made on the grounds that his mother's overbearing nature and my temporary absence were contributing to his distress. The treatment involved extensive therapy and three years of military school, resulting in substantial financial and emotional costs.Overcoming Obstacles
Despite the obstacles, the journey has been worth it. The act of embracing and supporting Owen required navigating through difficult situations, including legal battles. One significant moment involved legal action to ensure proper education, including a lawsuit that culminated in the intervention of a judge.
Economic and Emotional Burden
The transition and support of Owen required a great financial and emotional investment. The therapy and military school amounted to about $200,000, including legal and insurance costs.
It was all worth it to see her smiling though. It was worth it to experience her joy.
Similar to Owen, my experience underscores the challenges that come with parenting a transgender child, reflecting the importance of love, support, and understanding. The journey may be complex, but the rewards and joy at the end of it are immensely fulfilling.
