More and more, the technology sector is recognizing the value of jobs that require minimal human interaction. The traditional notion of IT often revolves around intuitively involving a significant amount of interpersonal communication, but certain roles within the field offer substantially less. For instance, network administration and database administration are two professions that predominantly operate with minimal direct human contact. Network Administration – A Minimal Interaction Role

Network engineering and administration stand out as jobs that require the least amount of direct interaction with people. The core function of a network administrator is to ensure the smooth operation of a company's network infrastructure, which, for the most part, doesn't involve frequent customer contact. Customers don't typically reach out to network administrators unless a problem arises, and in such cases, they submit a ticket. Once the network is set up, regular maintenance – such as network hardening, firmware upgrades, and hardware replacements – is required through systems management tools. While some interaction with colleagues may occur, particularly for rearchitecting projects, the primary interaction is usually technical in nature.

Database Administration and Interaction Levels

While database administrators (DBAs) inherently have a bit more human interaction, the level can vary depending on the specific role. Administrative DBAs are deeply involved in database security, necessitating interaction with customers who manage security protocols. On the other hand, developer DBAs have regular contact with application developers, discussing database requirements and integration. However, the interaction levels can differ; during rearchitecting projects, the level of human interaction may be higher. In all these cases, the primary goal is to ensure the database meets the requirements of its users efficiently and effectively.

Despite these interactions, the essence of the role remains to be a problem-solving oriented position where direct communication is minimal and focused on technical issues.

From personal experience, I spent 7 years in a small, isolated office located underground, where I worked on my own for virtually the entire duration.
