How INTJs can Master Networking in the Digital Age
INTJs Social Media Powerhouse
Fortunately for INTJs, social media platforms like LinkedIn are excellent for creating and sharing intellectual property such as articles, podcasts, and videos to reach targeted audiences. LinkedIn’s structured format allows INTJs, who generally prefer structured and goal-oriented actions, to showcase their expertise and thought leadership. This can help establish credibility and attract potential collaborators and clients.
While in-person networking remains a valuable strategy, online marketing allows people to know, like, and trust you before conducting business. Networking online provides a broader reach and a more controlled environment, enabling INTJs to craft their message and connect with a targeted audience.
INTJ Networking Strengths
I’ve recently been reminded of a couple of INTJ networking strengths. The best way to network is to solve other people's problems with no expectation of repayment. For years, I have been solving problems for people in my organization because that’s what I do. Recently, I was up for a promotion and was happily surprised to see numerous people go to bat for me, proactively contacting decision makers to urge them to support me. This highlights the importance of reputation and the value that people attribute to problem-solving.
Remember that many people appreciate meaningful relationships. You might not enjoy small talk, but you are good at being seriously interested and doing a deep dive. This deep interest and the ability to engage in meaningful discussions are valuable networking skills. INTJs often excel at providing insightful and thoughtful responses, which can lead to deeper connections.
A Practical Approach to Networking
Consider the example of an INTJ entrepreneur friend who attends business networking regularly. He uses his time wisely, talking to as many investors as possible. He is courteous, positive, and smiley, and likes to say: “keep up the good work,” “let me know how it goes, I am curious,” “let me know…” This shows that while INTJs might not be naturally outgoing, they can still build relationships through consistent and meaningful interactions.
Data-Driven Networking
To master networking, one must first collect 'people' data. I’ve bartended on and off for 20 years, gathering information on thousands of personalities and classifying them into groups. Then, based on the stereotype I know them to embody, I make minor adjustments as each person is unique in their own way. The end goal is to make as much money as possible from each person that approaches my bar. I don’t get mad; I simply respond to the 'people' data I observe.
Any INTJ could use this method for any goal associated with the normal social world. Think of the people and their personalities as data instead of actual people. This approach can help you understand and predict the behavior of your contacts, making your networking efforts more effective.
Build Your Credibility
To be a valuable networker, you must be skilled enough in your profession so that others will respect you. And if you are always seeking to progress, then you should seek out others wanting to do the same so you can progress together. Two minds are better than one. As you climb the professional ladder, you will meet more people. Just be open to meeting new people and building new relationships.
Conclusion
INTJs can effectively network by leveraging social media platforms, focusing on problem-solving, building meaningful relationships, and using a data-driven approach. Whether through online marketing or in-person interactions, the key is to be both strategic and genuine in your networking efforts.
