Exploring the Campus Life for Girls at Pondicherry University: Safety, Accommodation, and Nighttime Dangers
Pondicherry University stands out as one of the prettiest, biggest, and safest campuses among all the central universities, according to numerous firsthand observations. As an insider, I feel confident in recommending it, but I encourage you to explore and form your own opinion.
While the hostels for both genders are considered average in comparison to institutions like IISc, IITs, and IIMs, they represent excellent value for a government-run institution, especially considering that girls do not have to pay rent. However, room for improvement is evident in the older hostels, such as Yamuna, Cauvery, and Ganga, which are in a state of urgent need for refurbishment. The administration, granted a few years to revamp these buildings during the pandemic and beyond, could make significant progress towards modernizing and improving the student experience.
Newer accommodations, like Narmada, are a considerable improvement and offer more cleanliness and comfort. Additionally, the construction of three new girls' hostels is underway, with hopeful projections that they will be operational by the end of the year, promising enhanced living conditions for female students.
One of the noteworthy aspects of life at Pondicherry University is its lack of strict curfews. Students, including girls, can come and go as they please, reflecting a culture of trust and responsibility. Although the campus is generally safe, it's crucial for students to be vigilant about personal safety, especially at night.
As the saying goes, 'there but for the grace of God go I.' It is imperative to be conscious of the environment at night, particularly after rain. During such times, hordes of scorpions emerge, not just in hundreds but potentially thousands, venturing onto the lawns and roads, and even making their way into the ground floors of the hostels. While the campus administration nominally remains neutral, one warden's philosophy is to live and let live, highlighting a hands-off approach to dealing with these nocturnal intruders.
However, it's important to mention that the campus is home to a diverse array of fauna that can pose risks. Furthermore, there are several venomous snakes, such as cobras, and other smaller reptiles. While the administration prefers to observe and not intervene, students must remain alert to potential threats. Apart from these wildlife encounters, the overall atmosphere is conducive to a positive and fulfilling experience.
In short, while there are minor inconveniences, the ambiance at Pondicherry University is remarkably welcoming, offering a blend of safety, modernization efforts, and the serenity that comes with a lush green campus. Students looking for an enriched educational and living experience are encouraged to consider Pondicherry University.
