Exploring the Benefits and Realities of Volunteering

Volunteering offers an array of benefits and opportunities for personal and social growth, which is why many individuals choose to dedicate their time to various causes. I have been a volunteer throughout my life, beginning with my children's extracurricular activities, such as Girl Scouts and sports. Volunteering in these arenas not only set a good example for them but also supported others who were giving their time selflessly. It is an acknowledgment of the fact that getting help is not easy, especially when it comes to the children in foster care who need support more than most.

While I have volunteered in numerous places and for various organizations, my involvement has largely stemmed from personal interest and compassion. Over the years, I have seen how volunteering can lead to professional opportunities as well. For instance, students who engage in volunteer work can develop a keen interest in the organization, which could lead to employment or further professional development. Volunteering can also provide a fulfilling and purposeful way to stay busy during retirement, allowing older individuals to stay engaged and contribute to the community.

Some volunteers find their calling through community service as part of their court mandate. However, the scrutinizing and stigma associated with this role may not be suitable for everyone. Additionally, volunteering can serve as a means to keep busy while job hunting, which is a perfectly legitimate way to contribute to society.

Regardless of the reasons behind volunteering, participants can expect to work hard, gain a deeper understanding of themselves, and learn valuable lessons about the community. Volunteer work often leads to the formation of new friendships or even professional connections. People my age often find solace and support in a like-minded community, as we help each other amidst modern hypersensitivity and divisiveness.

To anyone interested in volunteering, I recommend trying it out and seeking advice from those who have already volunteered. Personal experiences can vary, but the life skills and insights gained from volunteering make it a worthwhile endeavor. Whether you choose to volunteer to set a good example for your children, help those in need, or simply find a sense of purpose in your later years, the experience is invaluable and enriching.
