Do Firefighters Do Search and Rescue?

Yes, firefighters frequently engage in search and rescue (SAR) operations. In fact, many fire departments now use the term 'fire and rescue' as the latter encompasses a wide range of rescue operations that are integral to their duties. These searches can range from the interior of burning buildings to neighborhoods affected by disasters, as well as missing children.

Fire and Rescue Operations

Fire departments see rescue as a crucial part of their mission. Whether it involves search operations within a burning building or responding to natural disasters, firefighters are often on the front lines of rescue efforts. Additionally, their training and resources enable them to conduct thorough searches, ensuring that no one is left behind.

Variety of Rescue Operations

Firefighters can indeed perform SAR operations in various scenarios. For example, following a fire, they may search for people who might still be trapped inside. If a disaster like a tornado, flood, or even a boating accident occurs, they can provide immediate rescue services. However, there is an overlap with specialized teams, particularly for wilderness SAR operations, which require a different set of skills and training.

Specialized Wilderness SAR Teams

Wilderness Search and Rescue (SAR) is typically carried out by specialized teams that are trained to operate in challenging and remote environments. These teams often have their own dedicated equipment and trained personnel. Both I and my colleagues have worked in both roles, and we found them to be rewarding in their own unique ways.

Firefighters take every opportunity to make safe entry into a burning building seriously. They cannot assume that all occupants have evacuated, especially in residential areas. Even recently arrived firefighters may find people inside, making thorough search and rescue procedures critical.

For certain types of events, such as specific wilderness incidents, specialized SAR teams are deployed due to the unique challenges of working in remote areas. However, in most other cases, firefighters can step in to provide the necessary rescue services, depending on the needs and resources available.
