**How Do Cats Respond to Living with Other Pets?**

My cat’s best friend is my dog. They play together all the time. My cat, Georgie, is 5, and my dog, Blue, is not quite 3. And there are times when Georgie will curl up with Blue in his bed to keep warm when the nights are cold. They groom each other and love on each other all the time, as I often say, they are best friends.

Compatibility with Other Pets

This would depend on the other pets.

My Personal Experience

From my own experience, they do fine. I had my first dog, a shihtzu named Tiffany, when I was on my own. Then, my friend convinced me to take in a kitten named Abbey. They got along great. When my sweet Tiffany passed away due to CHF just two months after my mother’s death from cancer, I was introduced to another shihtzu that needed a new home. I named her Lacey. Lacey and my cat Abbey got along fine. I had Lacey for 5 years until she passed from cancer, after which I adopted a sweet shihpoo named Rowdy. Rowdy turned out to be the love of my life, and we spent a lot of time together. Lacey and Rowdy were big buddies, and they would cuddle a lot, with Lacey grooming Rowdy.

Challenges and Acceptance

Then, my sweet Abbey had to be put down at 16 due to blindness and the loss of the use of her back legs. I knew Rowdy would be lonely, so I rescued a calico kitten from the Humane Society. By this time, I had started volunteering at the Humane Society, socializing dogs and making them feel loved and valued. I did this for nine years before my chronic pain prevented me from continuing. I named my new cat Chloe, and she was a very friendly, loving furbaby. When I brought Chloe home, Rowdy had the biggest smile, and his little stump of a tail was wagging. Chloe and Rowdy were big buddies, with Chloe even grooming Rowdy and laying across him. However, then Rowdy had some health problems, including stomach issues, anemia, and excruciating pain that could not be diagnosed by the vet. I eventually made the humane decision to let him go. My current feline companion, Chloe, is still a source of happiness, and I feel grateful for her companionship.

Contrasting Stories

During all that time, the cats and dogs were fine together. The only problem I ever had was between two female cats, not between cats and dogs. I was trying to convey the message that, while challenges can occur, overall, cats and other pets can coexist harmoniously.
