Bollywood's Portrayal of Stalking and Sexual Harassment: A Critical Analysis
One cannot help but wonder whether the claim that Bollywood promotes stalking and sexual harassment of women among Indians holds any truth. The movies I have seen in this genre prompt such a conclusion. Although I have only had the opportunity to watch a handful of films every one or two years, my observations suggest a clear pattern that justifies this association.
Elements Contributing to the Misconception
The issues surrounding stalking and sexual harassment appear to stem from several societal factors that together create an environment in North India, where women face significant challenges. These factors are:
1. Equality, Liberty, and Democracy
The democratic ethos of India is well-founded, with principles of equality, liberty, and democracy cherished by its populace. However, these same values can be misconstrued as justifying the societal pressure on Indian women. Middle-class men, especially young ones, may believe they are entitled to equal social access to women, just as characters in Bollywood films do. This belief is exacerbated by the depiction in movies, where male characters like Mr. Shakur Khan and Mr. Bachchan are portrayed as successful in achieving their goals through teasing, harassment, and ultimately winning the girl's affection. Their success in cinema can mislead ordinary Indian men into thinking, 'If they can do it, why can't I?'
2. Dress Codes and Social Norms
The portrayal of women in Bollywood adds another layer of complexity. Middle-class women in India often dress in a manner inspired by Bollywood actresses, donning clothes that are deemed sexy and often form-fitting. While freedom of expression is a valued principle, the influence of these outfits can have unintended consequences. Young men may feel encouraged to engage in sexually harassing behavior, perceiving the women as fair game. Unfortunately, it is highly unlikely that the women view such attention positively, often met with contempt due to their perceived superior status in society. The interaction becomes a source of frustration and conflict.
3. Cultural Sensitivity and Taste
The issue of taste further complicates the situation. Women who choose to dress in a manner resembling their Bollywood idols are essentially flaunting their choice, which can be seen as inappropriate in certain contexts. For instance, wearing attire that is overly revealing on public transportation can evoke a sense of tastelessness. The analogy is drawn to a situation where someone in a slum would be offended by seeing someone wearing expensive and exclusive food in front of them. Such behavior is often attributed to the influence of Bollywood culture, which, at times, sets unrealistic standards.
Conversely, it is noteworthy that young Caucasian women visiting India tend to dress modestly, recognizing the cultural norms and respecting local traditions. They understand that the style of dress promoted in movies is not reflective of the cultural fabric of India.
Conclusion
The portrayal of stalking and sexual harassment in Bollywood can be seen as contributing to a cycle of misconception and behavior among its viewership. While it is true that the depiction in films can lead to misinterpretations and dangerous behavior, the root of the problem lies deeper in societal attitudes and expectations. It is crucial for both the entertainment industry and the society at large to strive for a more nuanced and respectful portrayal of women and to set realistic and ethical standards.
Through a critical examination of the cultural impact of Bollywood, we can begin to address the complex issues surrounding stalking and sexual harassment in Indian society. This analysis should be the starting point for broader discussions aimed at fostering a more informed and empathetic society.
