A Journey into Education: From Drum Teacher to Educator
The Path to Education: A Drum Teacher’s Journey
My journey into the education sector wasn't planned; it was a serendipitous path that began when I was hired to teach drums in a small music store. A local manager and radio DJ rented a building, selling records and musical instruments in the front, while setting up a recording studio in the back. It was there that my life took a turn, leading me to teach music to young, eager minds.
The Spark of Education
The idea began when a manager, who was also a radio DJ, suggested we start giving music lessons in the back room of the store. I, who could read drum transcriptions and knew my rudiments, saw this as a chance to earn extra money. The students were mostly young boys, but there was one young girl who also took lessons. Teaching these young artists was a rewarding experience; I was passionate about it, and so were they.
Illuminating the Path to Excellence
Unlike other teachers, I didn’t just stick to the routine of teaching boring lessons. Instead, I showed them how great drummers of the day achieved their impressive beats and rolls in top hits. I also discussed drum brands with them, which ignited their curiosity and respect for me. They would even invite me over for dinner to meet their mothers, and this only further cemented our bond. These experiences were invaluable and are cherished memories to this day.
Expanding Horizons
As time passed, I transitioned into teaching jazz and found immense joy in it. I shared with my students the knowledge imparted to me by my own teacher. He once advised me: 'If you just want to be a drummer, keep going the way you are. But if you want to expand your career, learn to read music and more.' This advice resonated with me and fueled my growth as an educator.
The Early Intrigues of Education
My initial interest in education began when I was just seven years old. One rainy day, we had inside lunchtime, and I took on a leadership role, organizing and managing games for the other children. This experience taught me the art of leadership and the importance of guiding and motivating others.
Motivation and Niche
As I grew older, I realized that finding a field that interests me is a primary motivator. It also allows me to explore new areas without wasting time. I delved into web development and digital marketing, discovering a niche where I could work comfortably and happily. For many, this journey might seem uncertain and difficult, but I view it as a collective of skills that can be monetized.
The Necessity of Education
Despite the era’s perception that education might be vague and unnecessary, I believe it still provides a sense of security in terms of employment. In today’s unpredictable economic climate, education acts as the last and safest resort for employment, especially if other ventures don’t pan out.
Final Thoughts
To those seeking a path into education, my advice is to avoid cheap dopamine and the distractions that can dilute your focus. Instead, work on a skill and persistently develop it. Eventually, you will find a way to generate revenue and achieve a fulfilling life. It’s a journey that requires dedication and passion, but the rewards are immense.
Education, whether through traditional methods or innovative avenues, is the beacon of hope in a challenging world. It’s a path that I have chosen and continue to pursue with a sense of purpose and joy.
Note: This is an opinion piece, and everyone’s motivations and paths are unique.
