-ending Ragging in Madras Medical College: A Medical Students Perspective
Does Ragging Happen in Madras Medical College?
While I was a student, ragging was unfortunately a regular occurrence at the Madras Medical College (GMC). The incident I am referencing from GMC Bharatpur served as a stark illustration of the gravity of the issue, but I have seen similar disturbing circumstances in Tamil Nadu as well. However, it is heartening to note that there has been a noticeable decrease in recent years (though I am not entirely certain about this).
The Nature of Ragging
Senior students, who are often characterized by an egoistic and mentally unhealthy disposition, engage in ragging for various reasons. Some do it for sheer fun, while others participate because they had to endure the same experience in their own years. This stark juxtaposition with their studious habits in school is puzzling. Moreover, the lack of proper authorities to curb ragging and substances like alcohol or ganja is a common issue in government colleges.
What Do They Do?
Seniors often establish strict rules for first-year students. These rules include memorizing the names of 120 immediate seniors from the same hometown and a bizarre custom known as the Stanley chair from Mangalore, where students are made to assume an uncomfortable posture for hours.
These students are also subjected to significant harassment. For example, if you are resistant to these demands or if they feel bored, they will start harassing you in the guise of ragging. The most severe cases involve physical and psychological torture, where students are at the mercy of their seniors. Meanwhile, less severe cases may involve making students dance until exhaustion or asking them to fetch food or cigars from nearby shops.
Why Does This Occur?
There is no definitive answer, but some suggest that initial intentions were benign, such as mingling with juniors to help them get to know each other. However, it has evolved into a violent practice where even asking a junior's name is considered ragging.
Advice from a Medical Student's Perspective
To Seniors
Seniors, as medical students, your primary focus should be on your studies rather than instilling fear or harassment in your juniors. Respect and dignity are not granted; they are earned through actions. Remember, your juniors are not just mere students but are your brothers, fellow college mates, and fellow human beings. They deserve to be treated with dignity and respect. Embracing humility and not engaging in group behavior will set a better example.
To Juniors
Be brave and stand up against the injustices perpetuated by certain seniors. Recognize that juniors are often brainwashed and may fear standing up for themselves. However, true success and achievement come from being true to your values and committing to your goals. Avoid relying on seniors who do not respect you as a human being. Instead, choose down-to-earth, humble peers who do not form cliques. Standing against the wrong is not only important but necessary for personal growth and a healthier college environment.
Conclusion
I hope this article sheds light on the issue of ragging at Madras Medical College. Your role as a senior or a junior is crucial in building a respectful and conducive environment for everyone. Let us work together towards a culture of mutual respect and understanding.
